Using real objects — pizza slices — enhances understanding through embodied cognition. When children physically create and manipulate their pizzas, they make meaningful connections between shapes and their fractional parts, reinforcing their learning experience.
1. Cut a large circle from cardboard to represent your pizza. 2. Use a ruler to mark and cut it into 8 equal slices. 3. Decorate each slice with favorite toppings using colored paper. 4. Discuss how many slices make a whole pizza (8 slices = 1 pizza). 5. Choose a few slices to eat — how much of the pizza is left? Record as a fraction. 6. Share your pizza creations with family — explain the fractions!
