      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using real objects like a pizza to represent fractions leverages embodied cognition, allowing children to physically manipulate and visualize the concept. Cutting and sharing pizza engages them emotionally and socially, reinforcing the learning experience through collaboration.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a round plate (for pizza) and play dough or a paper plate. 2. Shape the play dough into a round pizza or draw a pizza on the paper plate. 3. Cut the pizza into 4 equal slices and label them as 1/4. 4. Cut it again into 8 equal slices and label them as 1/8. 5. Share your pizza with family members, explaining the fractions as you go. 6. Create a new pizza with different toppings and repeat the slicing and sharing.
