      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, kids physically manipulate paper pizzas, which allows them to experience fractions through action. Cutting and sharing pizza slices requires them to think critically about equal parts, linking math to everyday experiences and enhancing retention.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather colored paper (red for pizza, green for toppings). 2. Cut a large circle from the red paper for the pizza base. 3. Divide the circle into 8 equal slices using a pencil. 4. Cut out small shapes from the green paper as toppings. 5. Select some slices and cover them with toppings — how many are left plain? 6. Share your pizza with family — discuss the fractions you created!
