What this lesson teaches

This activity teaches children to visualize fractions using food. By dividing pizza slices, they gain a concrete understanding of parts of a whole, making fractions less abstract and more relatable.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition shows that learning through physical activity, like cutting pizzas, reinforces concepts. When children manipulate real objects to create fractions, they internalize the idea of parts and wholes, enhancing memory and understanding through experience.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a round piece of cardboard as your pizza base. 2. Draw or cut out 8 equal slices on it. 3. Use colored paper to create toppings for each slice — make some cheese, pepperoni, and veggies! 4. Decide how to share the pizza among family members, e.g., 2 slices each. 5. Label how many slices each person gets using fractions, like 2/8. 6. Discuss if any slices are left and what that means in fractions.
