      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using a physical object like a pizza taps into embodied cognition, allowing children to visualize fractions as they cut and share. The social aspect of sharing strengthens their understanding through collaboration and discussion.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a large round pizza base (or flat bread) and toppings (cheese, veggies, etc.). 2. Cut the pizza into equal slices (e.g., 8 pieces). 3. Count how many slices there are and how many toppings are needed for each slice. 4. Share the pizza among family, explaining the fraction each person receives. 5. Draw your favorite pizza and label the fractions of each topping. 6. Discuss with family how many slices you have left and how that relates to fractions!
