      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, children learn fractions by manipulating real objects, reinforcing their understanding as they visually and physically see parts of a whole. The act of sharing pizzas habituates the concept of division, providing context to fractions.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Cut a large circle from cardboard or thick paper to represent a pizza. 2. Divide the pizza into 4 equal parts (quarters) by cutting it into slices. 3. Color each slice differently using crayons. 4. Share the pizza: how many slices does each person get? 5. Discuss: if one slice is eaten, how many are left? What fraction is gone? 6. Create smaller pizzas and repeat with halves!
