      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By physically locating and marking points on a grid, children engage in embodied cognition, making abstract concepts more concrete. The treasure hunt aspect adds an element of excitement, encouraging exploration and repeated practice in a playful context.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Draw a large grid on a piece of paper with coordinates from (1,1) to (5,5). 2. Create 5 treasure locations using coordinate pairs (e.g., (2,3), (4,1)). 3. Write down each treasure's coordinates on separate pieces of paper. 4. Blindfold a family member and guide them to find the hidden treasures using the coordinates. 5. Once found, discuss each treasure's position by plotting it on the grid. 6. Create new coordinates for more hidden treasures for future hunts!
