What this lesson teaches

This activity introduces coding concepts as children learn to structure narratives through programming. By combining storytelling and coding, they grasp logical sequencing and gain a tangible understanding of how code functions in real-life applications.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Utilizing Bruner's CPA approach, children first visualize their story, then physically code it, reinforcing the connection between ideas and implementation. This method reduces cognitive load by breaking down coding into manageable chunks that can be easily manipulated and understood.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Open your Python IDE or online coding platform. 2. Write a simple story outline with 3 parts: beginning, middle, end. 3. Define variables for characters and settings in your code. 4. Create functions for each part of the story using print statements. 5. Use if-else conditions to allow choices for the reader (e.g., 'If the character chooses A, go to part 2'). 6. Share your interactive story with family and ask for their feedback!
