      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Utilizing embodied cognition, children physically engage with their learning by chopping and assembling fruits. This sensory experience solidifies their understanding of fractions, as they can see and taste the results of their calculations.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 3 different fruits like bananas, apples, and oranges. 2. Cut each fruit into equal parts: bananas into 4 pieces, apples into 2, and oranges into 3. 3. Count how many total pieces you have from all fruits combined. 4. Create a fruit salad using a specific fraction of each fruit (e.g., 1/4 banana, 1/2 apple, 1/3 orange). 5. Share your fruit salad with family and discuss how fractions work in your mix! 6. Reflect on how many total pieces can create different fractions together.
