Children learn critical thinking and planning by anticipating their opponent's moves. This hands-on activity allows them to experience the importance of strategy in a game format, helping them understand the cause-and-effect relationships inherent in chess.
Embodied cognition suggests that understanding concepts through physical interactions deepens learning. Creating their own chess pieces promotes engagement and helps children visualize strategies as they manipulate their game board.
1. Gather cardboard and scissors to make 16 unique chess pieces. 2. Use colored markers to design each piece, labeling them (King, Queen, etc.). 3. Draw an 8x8 grid on a large sheet of paper for the game board. 4. Place your pieces on the board in their starting positions. 5. Take turns with a family member making strategic moves, counting each piece's movement options. 6. Discuss your strategies after the game — what worked and what didn’t?
