      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, this activity transforms deep breathing into a tactile experience. Children inflate their balloon ‘buddies’ with each breath, reinforcing the connection between breath control and emotional calmness, leveraging Vygotsky's scaffolding through guided practice.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Inflate a balloon and tie it securely — this is your buddy. 2. Sit comfortably with your balloon buddy on your lap. 3. Take a deep breath in through your nose for 4 seconds. 4. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds, watching the balloon deflate. 5. Repeat this 5 times, focusing on inflating and deflating the balloon. 6. Share how you feel with your family after breathing together!
