This activity teaches children to regulate their breath, promoting mindfulness and focus. By visualizing a balloon inflating and deflating with each breath, children create a tangible connection to their calming techniques.
Using embodied cognition, the act of breathing in sync with a visual object (the balloon) reinforces focus. This multi-sensory approach reduces cognitive load, making it easier for children to manage stress and anxiety.
1. Inflate a balloon halfway and hold it tightly. 2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in, imagining the balloon inflating. 3. Slowly exhale, visualizing the balloon deflating. 4. Repeat this for 5 cycles, focusing on the rise and fall of the balloon. 5. Share your experience with a family member: how did your mind feel before and after? 6. Challenge yourself to do this before a study session!
