By engaging in controlled breathing, children activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which decreases stress and enhances focus. This aligns with the principles of mindfulness and embodied cognition, allowing kids to physically embody calmness through their breath.
1. Sit comfortably with your back straight and hands on your knees. 2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose for 4 counts. 3. Hold your breath for 4 counts. 4. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 counts. 5. Repeat this cycle 5 times, focusing only on your breath. 6. Open your eyes and notice how calm and focused you feel — try to maintain this focus on your next activity!
