      The learning connection

Using the balloon as a visual and physical representation of breath control embodies the concept of embodied cognition. Children see their breath's impact immediately, making the practice of deep breathing tangible and motivating.

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a balloon and a timer (or stopwatch). 2. Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your belly. 3. Place your lips on the balloon and slowly exhale into it, inflating it. 4. Time how long you can keep the balloon inflating with steady breaths. 5. Repeat 3 times, trying to beat your previous time! 6. Discuss how your body feels after breathing deeply — do you feel calmer?
