Mindful breathing helps children learn to regulate their emotions and focus. By concentrating on each breath while inflating a balloon, they cultivate awareness and control over their thoughts.
The practice of focused breathing engages the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body and mind. It employs the principles of embodied cognition, as physical actions (like blowing) are closely linked to emotional regulation and concentration.
1. Grab a balloon and stretch it a bit. 2. Take a deep breath in through your nose. 3. Slowly blow air into the balloon until it’s filled. 4. Focus on your breathing — count to three on the inhale, hold for two, then exhale. 5. Notice how you feel as the balloon inflates — are you calmer? 6. Share your experience with your family and try again together!
