      Why It Works

      The learning connection

This activity leverages embodied cognition — by engaging in a physical process like breathing while counting, children create mental associations that strengthen focus over time. The repetition involved forms a rhythm, which helps in reducing distractions and managing anxiety.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Sit comfortably on the floor or a chair with your back straight. 2. Close your eyes lightly and take a deep breath in through your nose (count '1'). 3. Exhale slowly through your mouth (count '2'). 4. Continue this pattern, counting each breath up to '10'. 5. Once you reach '10', start back at '1' and repeat for 2 minutes. 6. After finishing, share how you felt during the exercise with your family.
