What this lesson teaches

Breathing exercises enhance concentration by creating a physical representation of inhaling and exhaling. As children inflate and deflate the balloon, they improve their ability to focus on calming their minds through a tangible activity.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

This activity utilizes embodied cognition, where physical actions (breathing) are linked to mental states (focus). The visual feedback from the balloon's movement helps children connect their breath control to relaxation, enhancing their cognitive control.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a deflated balloon and hold it in your hand. 2. Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds. 3. Blow into the balloon slowly for 4 seconds, watching it inflate. 4. Hold the breath for 4 seconds while the balloon is fully inflated. 5. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 seconds, deflating the balloon. 6. Repeat the cycle 5 times and notice how calm you feel!
