      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and increasing focus. This aligns with Vygotsky’s scaffolding; as children practice breathing, they build self-regulation skills that lead to improved attention spans.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Inflate a balloon and hold it in one hand. 2. Sit comfortably and close your eyes. 3. Take a deep breath in for 4 counts, feeling your belly expand. 4. Hold your breath for 4 counts, then slowly exhale for 4 counts, imagining the balloon deflating. 5. Repeat the breathing 5 times, visualizing the balloon getting larger with each inhale. 6. Share how you felt before and after the exercise with your family.
