      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Utilizing embodied cognition, children learn animation by physically creating and controlling shadows, making abstract concepts tangible. The excitement of live performance enhances their understanding of timing and movement in animation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a flashlight, a white sheet, and small toys or cut-out shapes. 2. Set up the sheet as a screen by hanging it on a wall or a door frame. 3. Turn off the room lights and shine the flashlight on the toys or shapes behind the sheet. 4. Move the toys closer and farther from the light source to see how shadows change. 5. Create a short story using your shadow puppets and act it out. 6. Share your puppet show with family and discuss the story behind it.
