This activity introduces children to basic animation principles by using shadows. As they craft their puppets and manipulate light, they learn about movement, storytelling, and visual effects.
By engaging in puppet creation and shadow play, children experience embodied cognition, where physical actions reinforce understanding of animation concepts. Moving the puppets in front of a light source helps them visualize how animation works in real life.
1. Gather a cardboard box, scissors, and a flashlight. 2. Cut out simple shapes from the cardboard (animals, characters). 3. Attach these shapes to sticks to create puppets. 4. Set the box upright and shine the flashlight through the back. 5. Move the puppets in front of the light, creating shadow stories. 6. Share your story with family — what happens next?
