      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Sudoku engages children through embodied cognition as they physically place numbers, creating mental connections between symbols and their arrangement. This hands-on approach reduces cognitive load, making it easier to grasp the rules of number placement.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Draw a 4x4 grid on paper with 16 squares. 2. Fill in some numbers (1-4) in random squares — leave 8 empty. 3. Gather family members and explain the rules: each number must appear once in each row and column, plus each of the 2x2 boxes. 4. Take turns filling in the empty squares until the puzzle is complete. 5. Discuss the strategies you used to decide where to place each number. 6. Create your own Sudoku grid and challenge a family member to solve it!
