What this lesson teaches

Children learn the basics of programming by defining sequential steps to reach a goal. This activity helps them understand algorithms as a set of instructions, bridging the gap between abstract coding concepts and real-world applications.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using tangible items to represent programming commands embodies the principles of embodied cognition. As children physically map out their instructions, they solidify their understanding of logic flow, a foundational concept in programming.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather colored paper, scissors, and markers. 2. Design a treasure map layout on the paper, marking the start and treasure points. 3. Write down simple commands (like 'move forward 2 steps' or 'turn right') on separate pieces of paper. 4. Place these commands in the order needed to reach the treasure from the start. 5. Follow your own instructions to navigate the map and find the treasure. 6. Swap maps with a family member and decode each other's algorithms!
